AI-. though GRP applications are continually accepted, the application ranking cutoff date for 2012 is Feb- ruary 15. Applications received af- ter February 15, 2012 will b tleferred until 'the next ranking cycle. The Grassland Reserve Program is a voluntary program offering landown- ers and operators the op- portunity to protect graz- ing uses and related con- servation values by con- serving and restoring grassland resources. The focus of GRP in Kentucky will emphasize preservation of native and naturalized grasslands and protection of grazing operations with excellent land management practic- es. Those easement of. fers that enhance or estab- lish native grasses, will re- ceive ranking preference for easements while, rent- al offers that exhibit prop- er grazing use will receive ranking " preference for rentals:. : :: The compensation por- tion of the Food, Conser- vation, and Energy Act of 2008 for GRP authorizes easement compensation based on the fair market value of the land, as deter- mined by an appraisal or an area-wide market analy- sis or survey, which takes into account the grass- land value, and is limit- ed to a geographic cap. or the landowner offer. GRP rental contracts provide selected landowners and operators to receive annu- al payments to maintain or restore grassland func- tions and values for the length of the contract. All participants in GRP are required to implement a grazing management plan which will be devel- oped in conjunction with NRCS. Eligible land for GRP includes grasslands for which gazing or haying is the predominant use, or. land that has been histor- ically dominated by grass-. land, forbs, or shrub land. Restoration for land en- rolled in GRP has a max- imum cost share rate of 50%. Additional program information is provided on the NRCS Kentucky Web page: http://wwW, ky.nrcs. usda,gov/programs.
