Bath County News-Outlook Your Hometown NVewspaper March 17, 2011 5 OPINION Making It Up As I Go Along By: Harry Patrick I lie down on the couch, turn CNN News on. Too much bad news, hit the Mute button and close my eyes. My left arm is over my eyes and I can hear the faint tick, tick, tick of my watch. I've had this watck for a long time, changed the band on it three times. I've just watched the Academy Awards and the motion picture industry is alive and well. The actors go to work. Scene One... Action... Cut. I wish I could plan my life out like that. Mark the scenes out so I could fol- low a script and get the job done for the day. You know, get through the day. My life is not a movie. I know literally what is around every corner in this small town, but metaphori- cally, I don't. It could be anything. It could be positive and it could be negative There is not a rule book " for me to base my life on. I make it up as I go along. I'm not the world's best housekeeper, but it works for me. If I'm having a good day, the cleaning gets done. If I'm having a bad day, the three cats take over and I give in. It's not worth the worry and strain on me to try to be productive when I'm in a certain mood. The guidebook and the rules for me change daffy. I didn't have a father to guide me and my mother was a "temporary caretak. el;' of me and my siblings. I've long forgiven her for her inattentiveness to me - she kept us clothed and fed and we always had a roof over our head. But the affection and love was scat- tered and didn't land on me a whole lot. I didn't have a script to follow back then. I made it up as I went along, hoping all the pieces of my life all would fall into place one day. My life is still falling.. into phce. But, it works for me. Whatever I'm doing, it works for me. I like hving alone, eat- ing my microwave dinners, making my own menu up as I go along, not follow- ing anybody's rules but my own. I can't believe I've made my own way this far, my way, for the last 21 years. An independence, a free- dom like no other, to an- swer to no one but myself. I behave myself out in pub: hc, do my job well, mind my own business, don't make waves -hose kinds of rules I know about. - those kind of things I have to answer for, so I try to do it right the first time - the job of get- ting through the day. Final Scene... Action. .. Cut. However, I am the direc- tor of the Final Scene. I can edit it, add to it, play it over and over in my mind and have the final say on what I will show to the world I've probably shared too much already with the world, but that's water un- der thLe bridge - can't take it back, don't really want to take itt back. Because, what have I got to lose if I tell the truth about myself?. BettLer to reveal myself as I am before someone puts out the wrong signals and messages about who they think I am and what I stand for. I am the record keeper, the accountant, the judge of my life. Only God can make the Final Judgment concerning me and I hope He judges me for who I am and not who He wants me to be. I'm making it up as I go along... Action... Cut... Why? Cfem"m--Tfitirman wrote in Gospel Minutes, "An orderly society is _ilarriage, and marriage is based on trust and faithfulness" (1- 29-2010). I think Mr. Thurman is right and here is why. First there would be no society at all without marriage. God joins a man and a woman together in marriage and children (thus society) come into being. Marriage is the only relationship approved by God in which procreation shoul d take place. Hebrews 13:4 tells us "Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers GOd will judge." Children bom out of wedlock leads to confusion and chaos in society, not orderliness. We have seen this in our generation: who is the father of that child? Second an orderly society is based on marriage because a stable home encourages order in society. A home in which father and mother love each other is a home ira which children learn how to behave in society. You may have heard the old saying, "As goes the home so goes the nation." It may be an old saying but it is still tree. It is so tree that God made this a requirement for leaders in the church. Elders are to be "the husband of one wife" and who "roles his own house will, having his children in subjection with all reverence" (1 Timothy 3:2-5). A well ordered home produces a well-ordered society and a well ordered church. Third trust and faithfidness is the basis of every good marriade. Trust in the faithhdness of a spouse provides the freedom to go to work away from home. A productive work force is absolutely necessary for the success of any society. Trust and faithfulness in the marriage relationsship makes this possible. Unfaithfulness brings suspicion, distrust, anO chaos. Husbands love your wives. And wives respect your husbands (Ephesians 5:24-33). Thank you for reasonimg with me.
