Traditional Irish Bless- mg Wednesday, March 17, 2021, St. Patrick’s Day was observed. St. Patrick’s Day origi- nally started as a Christian feast-day celebrating the life of St. Patrick and the spreading of Christianity to Ireland, today, it is a day of celebration of all things Irish. The man who would eventually become St. Pat- rick was born in Britain (part of the Roman Empire at the time) as Maewyn Succat in the late 4th cen- tury. ' His family was Christian, but it’s said that Maewyn himself was an atheist throughout his childhood. That would change at age (around AD. 400), when Maewyn was kid— napped from his home on the west coast of Britain by Irish pirates, who proceed- ed tO carry him off to Ire- land and force him to work herding sheep. After six years, and many harrowing experi- ences at the hands of his captors, he escaped his captors, walking nearly 200 miles through the Irish landscape and con- vincing a ship to carry him with them back to Britain. This harrowing experi- ence certainly had an ef- fect on Maewyn, who was convinced it was the Lord who protected him and de- livered him safely home. Upon returning home, Maewyn received his call (in a dream) to preach the Gospel—in Ireland! He spent the next 15 years, preparing for his missionary work while living in a monastery in Britain. When he became a priest, his name was changed to Patricius, and he returned to the land of his captors to begin his teachings. Although some Chris- tians already lived in Ire- land at the time, the coun- try was 1argely pagan, so spreading a foreign religion was not an easy task. Patricius or Patrick traveled from village to vil- lage to share the teachings of the Lord, and was suc- cessful enough to eventu- ally found many churches there. Irish wear a shamrock on St. Patrick’s Day be- cause, legend says, St. Pat- rick used its three leaves to explain the Holy Trinity in Owingsville Heights his teachings. (The Trinity is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as three di- vine persons who are one divine being [God].) Don’t forget to wear green because the more modern tradition is based the fierce independence of the Irish people who wear green as a reminder that they are Irish nationalists first and foremost and the colors of the Irish flag are green, white and orange, the green symbolizing the Irish nationalism. Irish also wear green on St. Patrick’s Day to become invisible to leprechauns! Although many parades, normally held as part of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations across America have been canceled due to Covid-19, families and friends will still gather in small num- bers to celebrate this great Irish Holiday. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Frenchburg FOR SALE 05 Town and Country 174K 3500 down or 04 Grand Cher- Mark Hawks and Wenda okee 4X4 175K $800 down. D. Hawks to Gregory L.
