It was hung in the Bath County court- house instead, where it remained until a few years ago when it vas put in storage in a closet of the courthouse. The cost of the rehabilitation of the painting was $4,000, paid mostly with funds raised by the Frenchburg/Menifee County Chamber of Commerce which initiated transfer of the painting from Bath County to Menifee County. Richard Menefee was regard- ed as Owingsville's most illus- trious native son. However, Dr. Robert Haynes of Mt. Sterling, who is a former superintendent of the MQntgomery County Schools, discovered that when Menefee was born, Owingsville was a part off Montgomery County and did not become the county seat of Bath County until after Bath County was chartered later. Dr. Haynes was doing research on Menefee for the Mt. Sterling/Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, which honored Menefee at its awards banquet last fall by naming his Contributing Citizen of the Founding Era, 1792-1900.
