And never before have
opinion, knee-jerk reac-
tions, and first impressions
come to pass for news.
As young people come of
age today, they are coming
to expect that this is the
way facts are conveyed, in
a split-second haze of im-
ages, witty phrases, and
the rule of the loudest and
rudest. Many adults who
should know better seem
to be falling for the same
sad state of affairs.

This makes us all tend
to fall for those who tend
to speak with the most cer-
tainty.
We all know people who,
when they speak, speak
with such authority that
there is nothing more to
say. They force you to ei-
ther agree or not, and if
you don't, you are left feel-
ing in the wrong.
It's kind of like the old
joke, "Are you still beating
your wife?" There is no
good answer, once you are
put on the spot.
People filled with cer-
tainty, especially about po-
litical issues, are like that.
That attitude always
short-circuits healthy
debate and the free flow
ideas in conversation.
But in the present confu-
sion of too much informa-
tion and too much news
in this complex world we
live in, it's easy to side with
those who are most cer-
tain.
I cannot tell you the
number of people I have
encountered over the past
year in this county who
tell me that, while they
appreciate my news cover-
age and occasional history
and outdoors writing, they
wish I would take an edito-
rial stand on local issues.
They want to tease out
opinion and look for
direction in what I might
have to say.
They walk away disap-
pointed, simply because I
have nothing for them.
I can assure readers
that I do have opinions,
whether on our how our
local government oper-
ates, the school board, the
drug problem, the lack
of economic opportunity,
and even the existence of
Bigfoot, but I will only be
sharing them with family,
friends and in the voting
booth.
I have no interest in talk-
ing down to you, readers,
and telling you how things
should be. I trust you have
the ability to take the facts
I pass along to you and
make your own decisions.
I have faith in the ability
of democracy to work and
in the ability of people to
determine the direction of
their own lives.
Keeping my opinions to
myself forces me to focus
on doing my best job to
bring you the most local
news and as many sides of
the story as I am able.
The less time I spend
editorializing, the more
time I have to be a better
reporter.
That's my opinion, and
I'm sticking to it.
