State and local officials
were on hand Tuesday
morning at the French-
burg Farmers Market to
celebrate National Farmers
Market Week and the 40th
Anniversary of the French-
burg Farmers Market.
Local vendor Robert
Doyle. welcomed Com-
munity Farm Alliance Ex-
ecutive Director Martin
Richards and Sharon Spen-
cer, Director of the Direct
Farm Marketing Division
of the Kentucky Dept. of
Agriculture.
Doyle noted that the
Frenchburg Farmers Mar-
ket got its start with the
late Marvin Botts, who sold
produce out of his pick-up
truck on Main Street and
helped to start the local
farmers market in 1981
with the help of the Coop-
erative Extension Service.
He also thanked the City
of Frenchburg for building
and maintaining the farmers
market pavilion on Back
Street with grant funding
in the mid-20005.
Doyle said the market
has been a great success
with the support of the
community and With great
vendors. He said this year
a record number of ven-
dors had signed up to par-
ticipate.
Martin Richards noted
that last year, when grocer-
ies stores were running
low on inventory because
of the COVID-19 pandem—
ic, people turned to their
local farmers, markets for
food.
The Community Farm
Alliance sponsors the Dou-
ble Dollars Program for
individuals participating in
SNAP, WIC, and the Senior
Voucher programs, to help
increase access to fresh,
local food for low-income
individuals and to increase“
sales. for, Kentucky farm:
