Let's Reason Together
By Alton Norman - Owingsville Church of Christ

Disqualified
Joe Paterno won
more football games
than any college coach
but he will not be re-
membered for that mile-
stone. The judgment of
the NCAA stripped him
of that rifle and struck
his name from their re-
cord books as a result
of his part in the San-
dusky fiasco. But wait
a minute I think I read
something like that in
the Bible! John wrote
a letter to the church in
Sardis and said "I know
your works, you have a
name that you are alive,
but you are dead." Then
he calls for that church
to repent and says, "He
who overcomes shall
be clothed in white gar-
ments, and I will not blot
his name from the Book
of Life..." (Revelation
3:1-5). Joe Paterno's
name has been blotted
out of the book of the
NCAA and Christians
who do one overcome by
repenting of their sins
will have their names
blotted out of the Book
of Life.
Paul spoke of sports
when he wrote to Timo-
thy and said, "If anyone
competes in athletics,
he is not crowned unless
he competes according
to the rules" (2 Timo-
thy 2:5). And Jesus said
some who had "prophe-
sied in His name" would
not enter the kingdom of
heaven (Matthew 7:21-
23). Why? They did
not "do the will of My
Father in heaven". Even
Paul had to discipline
himself lest after hav-
ing preached to others
he would "become dis-
qualified" (1 Corinthians
9:27).
The NCAA declared
Joe disqualified. And
God will disqualify every
Christian who does not
compete according to
His rules. But in spite of
all of this some preach-
ers still preach the false
doctrine of "once saved
always saved". Amaz-
ing!
Thank you for rea-
soning with me.
